i'll be needing one for photography this year and i don't think there's amuch of a chance of me getting anything fabulous with my craptastic little kodak easyshare c643.

Only issue with it is the manual focus buttong instead of a focus ring.
However, that's a bit much but if you can find a similar camera, I think that'd work well. Canon and Nikon are better known for their lenses. You should be able to find a nice Powershot from Canon for under $500.
It's a matter of looking around in stores and knowing what you need in a camera.
